Why Your Current Lifestyle May Be Hurting You + 3 Simple Remedies to Avoid It!

Did you know that 5-10% of all disease is genetic? The rest is caused from poor thoughts, poor diet and poor lifestyle choices. I know it’s pretty shocking when you learn this for the first time.

We are all creatures of habit and it takes a lot to stop doing anything, even if it is killing us. How we think is how we live. How we eat is how we live. How we choose to run our life is how we live — or may I say exist.

Back in the nineties I lived in NYC, partied my butt off being fabulous while working for Prada and only cared about LOOKING GOOD.  My mind, body and lifestyle were a recipe for disaster.

I pushed myself beyond 100%, traveled the world, drank, smoked and ended up with total burnout, and to boot, a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. I had no idea of where to begin and was in a high-stress work environment with people who could care less about being healthy.

Living the fast lane is thrilling, but it also is deadly.

I am asking you to get honest with yourself and look to see if your current lifestyle may be the source of what’s killing you.

[If you are wanting to make a change in your lifestyle but not sure how to make that happen, then don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging to figure it all out by yourself.]

Meet Your Eco-system.

It consists of — mind, body and surroundings and all of this equals your lifestyle.

Some would add spirit to the mix, but for the purpose of this article, I’ll keep that within the mind and body part. What are your thoughts? What are you putting into your body? What is the way in which you live your day to day life? Who do you spend time with?

I’m going to lay out for you to see where you can adjust and make improvements. Make sure not to beat yourself up here; we are all in this together and constantly evolving.

Don’t sweat it; you’ll get good gems you can use right now.

Mind

What do you tell yourself day in and day out? If you are anything like me, then your inner critic needs to take a vacation. Your mind is most likely where you are making your choices, and this is part of the problem. It’s time to upgrade the why to what you do in your life.

What drives you to do what you do? Are you living in a place that you don’t feel good and pushing to make it work? Have you checked in with your current value system? Living your life to fit in or make your parents happy will lead to an unhappy existence. Make yourself happy.

Remedy: Watch your thoughts and question their motives. When you have an idea that you want to make a change, do it in spite of the crazy negative thoughts. Before choosing to do something to make others happy or to look good, feel if it’s something you really want to do. Slow down, avoid pushing yourself and choose based on your values.

Body

What are you putting into your body? How are you treating it? Now that we are moving out of thinking, we can start feeling and connect to the body. Most of us have a disconnect and live from the neck up and make choices that actually kill our bodies.

When you are thirsty…drink, hungry…eat, stiff…stretch, tired…sleep. Do you know when your body gives you these messages? If you are eating fast food, processed foods at your desk or while rushing around, then you are missing out on one of the most amazing pleasures of life.

Make sure you eat as much unprocessed and organic foods that you can. Drink clean water only. When you are hungry, drink water first. Stretch and sleep so your body can restore.

When your body experiences pleasure that is without toxicity, then you don’t have to fight weight, unhappiness or feeling unworthy. This goes with working out; make sure you are doing activities you love.

Remedy: Slow down. Begin to feel. When you wake up in the morning, take a moment to pause, feel, breathe. Check in and ask yourself how you feel. What do you need. Listen and respond. Schedule time to take care of yourself. I suggest an hour or 30 min. in the morning to tune in and take care.

Surroundings

This is the most important part of your eco-system to support a real change. If you are hanging out with smokers, drinkers, naysayers, broke folks, and acting like you are still in college, then you have some work to do. Who you hang with is a reflection of yourself. As one of my mentors says, “Be the company you wish to keep, so keep good company.”

Do you say, “I have no choices, I have to live here, or I have to be friends with them.”? Well, you don’t. That is one of the biggest lies we believe. See how the mind gets in there?

Let’s say you are ready to change your thoughts, eating habits, exercise habits and share with a friend who laughs at you and says, “You always try, and it never works.”

Then you feel bad and go back into your habitual way of living, even though you are tired of it.

Remedy: You see the red flag of who does not support you then take your goals somewhere else where you are supported. You can find meet-up groups and hang out in the places where you will meet new people who are wanting to upgrade their lifestyle.

Remember, you’re part of the conversation. What is your take? Let me know in the comments below!
